The Basics
Board Starts

Gleefully skimming across the water is so close now you can almost feel the exhilaration. Exclusive to KWTV, Fat Sand introduce a cut from their Progression: Beginner DVD to take you through the final, tricky stages of nailing the board-start

Getting started:
1. Body drag out until you're a safe distance from the beach, depending on wind direction and wave size.
2. Bring the kite up slowly to 12 o'clock.
3. Put one hand at the middle of the bar and use the other hand to pull in the leash and recover the board.
4. Take the board either by one foot-strap or handle and bring the board in front of you.
5. Lie back in the water and put your feet in the foot-straps one at a time while keeping an eye on the kite so it doesn't drop down and touch the water. Don't worry if it moves slowly to one side or the other.
6. Put both hands back on the bar. Keep your weight back against the kite and your legs pulled into your shoulders. Your front leg should be less bent, allowing you to hold speed once you get up on the board.
7. Position your kite in the opposite direction you intend to go - at 1 or 11 o'clock.
8. Dive the kite into the power zone in the direction you want to go.
9. Let the kite's power pull your shoulders over your knees and up over the board. Don't forget to continue steering the kite otherwise it will crash into the water.
10. Extend your legs once your body is over the board and the board has started to accelerate. Initially you want the board to point downwind, so apply pressure to the front foot and stretch out the front leg.
11. As you gain speed transfer weight between your heels to keep the upwind edge of your board engaged in the water.
12. Steer the kite back up in the power zone as and when you need more power.
